


The first game I played from Brazilian developers JoyMasher was Oniken, a hard as nails retro action affair that reminded me of Battletoads in its willingness to kill me over and over again. If you remember a time when character sprites took up what seemed like half of your screen real estate, and action was solid and punchy, Odallus: The Dark Call will feel like going home, to a simpler place. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time. Once and a while I'd fall off the screen in a secret area, but the way the game keeps your progression, these were but minor annoyances. I only encountered one control issue, as you can have a hard time mantling up an edge, which causes a frustrating time with the boat that moves along by itself. The monsters have a great variety, and the Bosses are challenging, forcing players to memorize patterns, and test their reflexes. The control is smooth and precise, making the experience even more enjoyable. The game features an incredible bit-chip midi soundtrack that keeps the mood of each area. The Graphics are dark and moody, bringing back the feel of the game's spiritual predecessors. After you've defeated a level you can return to it at any time, allowing you to gain new abilities and search for the secrets, including the real Exit. The gameplay is done on a variety of open exploration 2D maps with multiple paths and a Secret exit that's required to find to defeat the game.
